Pelvic pain in pregnant women, also known as Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PPGP), is a common symptom, especially in the mid and late stages of pregnancy. This pain may affect one or more areas of the pelvic region, including the ilium, pubic bone, and sacrum.

The causes of pelvic pain may include:

  1. Joint relaxation: The hormone relaxin in the body during pregnancy increases, causing ligaments to become more relaxed to prepare for the expansion of the pelvis during childbirth. This relaxation may lead to decreased stability of the pelvic joints, resulting in pain.

  2. Weight gain: As the fetus grows, the increase in weight adds pressure to the pelvic area.

  3. Postural changes: To accommodate the weight gain, a pregnant woman's posture may change, potentially putting additional pressure on the muscles and joints in the pelvic region.

  4. Pelvic joint misalignment: Hormonal changes in the body can decrease the stability of the pelvic joints, increasing the risk of misalignment. Pelvic joints may become misaligned or asymmetrical, leading to pain.

    • Symphysis Pubis: This is a joint located in the front of the pelvis that connects the pubic bones on both sides. Symphysis pubis misalignment refers to this joint becoming too relaxed, causing separation or misalignment of the pubic bones on both sides, which can result in pain, especially when walking, standing, or changing positions.

    • Sacroiliac Joints: These joints are located in the back of the pelvis, connecting the sacrum and ilium. Misalignment or instability of the sacroiliac joints refers to excessive movement or asymmetry in the joints, possibly due to decreased support from relaxed ligaments. This condition can cause lower back or hip pain, sometimes radiating down the legs.
